Vices

INTRODUCTION

A vice is a mechanical screw apparatus used for holding or clamping a work piece to allow  work to be performed on it with other tools like saws, planes, drills etc. They usually have three parts - fixed jaw, movable jaw and the screw. The fixed jaw is fixed at one place while movable jaw move to and fro with the help of screw.

In other words, the device which id used to hold or clamp the work piece to produce machining operation on it is known as vice.

Types Of Vice

Vices are broadly classified into two types which are given below :-
  1. Machine Vice
  2. Bench Vice

Machine Vice

The  device which is used to hold the work piece in different machining operations such as drilling, milling, shaping etc. is known as Machine Vice. It is adjustable in many different ways, allowing the work piece to be manipulated into any angle or position required. This type of vice is crucial when a certain angle is required to be repeated on several pieces. This type also consist two jaws and one screw to perform its function.

Parts Of Machine Vice :- Some important parts of machine vice are given blow :-

  1. Fixed Jaw : The fixed jaw of machine vice is a metal piece that is attached to the table or work bench. This jaw is fixed at one place. It has one flat side with grooves to prevent a metal or wood object from slipping through the vice.

  2. Movable Jaw : A movable jaw has a flat, grooved surface that faces the fixed jaw. Both the jaw are of equal length and width, but the movable jaw is attached to a screw that allows it to move closer to or further away from the fixed jaw.

  3. Screw : The screw is a long square threaded piece of metal that moves the movable jaw to and fro. It usually has a metal rod through its head that is perpendicular to the screw and parallel to the jaws. It helps to rotate the screw and move the jaws closer together.

  4. Body : Body is the most important part of the machine vice. It is that upon which all other defined parts are mounted to perform their function.

Bench Vice

As the name indicates, the device which is attached to the bench to perform its function is known as Bench Vice. It is the most popular type of vice. It consist cast iron body and cast iron jaws. It is a device for firmly holding an object the someone is working on. It consist of two jaws one fixed other movable that can be brought together with a screw mechanism.
